Three Shells is a small village located in the county of Essex, England, just outside the city of Chelmsford. It is situated on the River Chelmer and is close to the M11 motorway, making it easily accessible from London and other major cities in the country.

The village takes its name from the three ancient chalk pits that are located nearby. These pits are believed to date back to the Iron Age, when the area was occupied by the Celts. The remains of a Bronze Age palisade, which would have surrounded the village in those days, can still be seen in the area, making it an archaeological site of some importance.

The earliest written record of the village dates from 1253, when it was known as Shelwerdes. In the 16th century, it underwent a period of rapid growth and expansion, becoming a thriving market town. At this time, a number of inns and alehouses were established, as well as a weekly market and an annual fair.

In the 19th century, the village was home to several prominent families, including the influential Rochford family. They owned several large estates in the area, including the Rochford Hall, which is still standing today.

The village still retains many of its historic features, including a beautiful village green, which is surrounded by a number of historic buildings, including the local church, the White Hart Inn and the Three Shells pub. The pub is named after the three ancient chalk pits, and dates back to at least the 17th century.

Although the village is relatively small, it is home to a number of interesting attractions, including the Three Shells Nature Reserve, which is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust. The reserve is an area of wetland, marsh and woodland, and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including a variety of birds, mammals and amphibians.

Three Shells is also home to a number of small businesses, including a number of local shops, a post office and a variety of cafes and restaurants. The village also hosts a number of popular annual events, such as the Three Shells Fair and the Three Shells Music Festival.
